It should be the first priority to reduce this resonance before any other mod is applied.I guess we’re lucky with our R144, because a lot of the cheap ribbon microphones suffer from sagging ribbons. The MXL R144 is a cheap ribbon microphone, with a ribbon motor (capsule) similar to the Cascade fathead, and the Nady RSM 4/5, amongst others. The biggest problem with this particular mic is a high self resonance around 400Hz if you tap the mic body, the stand, or the XLR wire. This time a new capsule pedestal was included, bringing the capsule down a bit, something we did notice when removing the inner head-basket, the original capsule sat in there way to high!!Last thing to do was to replace the cheap 12ax7 tube with the gold EHX-6072A, put the mic back together and warm up the mic for a test. We missed a loose cable, but that was an easy fix!Next we replaced the original Capsule with the RK-12, again this was not that hard. We chuck in the new parts, and hook the original capsule back up for another circuit test.
